Harvest Books & Crafts was set up in 1984 by a group of Christians from different Churches in the Valleys town of Pontypridd South Wales. Previously a charity had been formed, Pontypridd Christian Concern (PCC), whose aim was to encourage people to think Biblically about every aspect of life and to put those thoughts into action.
One early ambitious project was to purchase a property in the centre of the town which could be used for counselling and reaching out to the community and which could also house a Christian bookshop. Because of the overwhelming emphasis in the Bible for caring for the poor the shop also sold Fair trade crafts from Tearfund, the Christian Development agency and more recently Fair trade foods.
Pontypridd Christian Concern has over the years supported many intiatives including medical relief in the Ethiopian famine, supporting young interns to work in the local churches supporting a youth worker to visit schools, organise interchurch youth work on a weekly basis as well as annual camps.
More recently it has been responsible for setting up PONT, a twinning arrangement between Pontypridd & Rhondda Cynon Taf & Mbale Town & District in Uganda. This has been so successful that it has now become a separate charity with links being made on every level with local government, hospitals, police, ambulance, schools, churches, University etc.
